- Recall Alert: 275,000 Cadillac, Pontiac, Saturn Cars and Crossovers (12/21/07)
- GM announced it would recall 275,936 vehicles in the U.S. due to a faulty seal. The recalled vehicles include: 2005-07 Cadillac CTS, 2005-07 Cadillac STS, 2005-07 Cadillac SRX, 2006-07 Pontiac Solstice, 2007 Saturn Sky
The company said it had received a “higher than normal” number of warranty claims for the faulty seal, which can leak fluid, leading to a loss of control. One crash has been reported, in which the rear wheels locked due to a leak. In another incident, a driver was injured when his vehicle lost control. The seal will be replaced for free, and the recall will begin in February 2008. Owners can call Cadillac at 800-982-2339, Pontiac at 800-620-7668 and Saturn at 800-972-8876 for more information.
- Toyota recalling 15,600 Tundra pickups in U.S. (12/14/07)
- Toyota Motor Corp said on Friday that it is recalling 15,600 Tundra pickup trucks in the United States because a rear propeller shaft may separate at the joint. The recall involves 2007 model-year Tundra four-wheel-drive pickup trucks. "There is a possibility that a joint in the rear propeller shaft may have been improperly heat treated, resulting in insufficient hardness," Toyota said in a statement. This may cause a section of the rear propeller shaft to separate at the joint, it added. No injuries or accidents have been connected to the recall.
- Chrysler Recalls 570,000 Dodge Trucks, Vans (12/7/07)
- Chrysler said Friday it's recalling nearly 600,000 Dodge trucks and vans. The company said it's addressing concerns that the vehicles could shift out of park without the key in the ignition. Chrysler said there have been nine incidents involving injuries connected to the problem, but no fatalities have been reported. The recall affects 576,417 2001-2002 Dodge Dakota trucks and Dodge Durango sport utility vehicles and the 2002 Dodge Ram pickup. Owners will be notified starting in January 2008 and dealers will replace the gearshift blocker and bracket assembly. In the meantime, the company is advising vehicle owners to use the parking brake at all times when the vehicle isn't in use.

- A faulty engine sensor has caused a massive recall of 1997-2003 Ford Super Duty pickups, Excursion SUVs and E-Series vans outfitted with a 7.3-liter diesel engine. The defective part can degrade over time and cause the engine to stall. Ford reports there have been 14 accidents or incidents when the vehicles lost control. Letters will be sent to owners later this month.

- Ford-owned Volvo Cars recalls 58,000 vehicles (11/22/07)
- Volvo Cars said Thursday it was recalling 56,000 vehicles because of two separate problems. Volvo Cars spokeswoman Maria Bohlin said 38,000 diesel cars of the S60, V 70 XC 70 and XC 90 models made in 2006 were being called back in Europe due to a material fault that could cause the motor catching fire. The second callback, involving 18,000 of the company's latest V 70 and XC 70 models, relates to an air bag problem in the side of the car. Bohlin said the fuel injector plants or bolts, located on top of the motor cylinder, were faulty, potentially causing diesel to leak out into the motor. Injector plants or bolts would be replaced free-of-charge in a procedure that would take about two hours, she said. With the air bags "there's a risk they don't launch fast enough," Bohlin said. The cars mainly have been sold in Sweden, Britain and in the U.S.
- Nissan expands Sentra, Altima recall (11/20/07)
- Nissan Motor Co. is expanding a U.S. recall of Sentra and Altima sedans to fix a faulty crankshaft sensor in 2002 and 2005-2006 models that may shut off the engine, Bloomberg News reported today. The recall covers about 653,910 vehicles with 2.5-liter engines, Tokyo-based Nissan told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in a Nov. 8 letter posted today on the agency's Web site. The sensor's location may expose it to temperature variations that would interrupt signals it sends to the engine control module, the automaker said. Without the signals, the control module may shut off the engine in low-speed driving, Nissan said.

Razor has received 25 reports of welds breaking on the handlebar, including three reports of injuries, the safety agency said. The battery-powered scooters were sold at Pep Boys (PBY.N: Quote, Profile, Research) stores and various Internet retail sites in 2006 between January and October. The Chinese-made blue or silver scooters were sold for between $190 to $230 and the recall covers those with barcodes beginning 100620-03 through -09. In 2005, Razor announced a recall of 246,000 electric scooters for a similar problem. Consumers were asked to stop using the scooters immediately and to contact Razor USA for a free repair kit. - Chrysler LLC recalled 28,755 Jeep Commander and Grand Cherokee sport-utility vehicles to replace front-brake parts that could fail because they may be made of the wrong type of metal, Bloomberg News reported today. The recall affects 2007 and 2008 models, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its Web site. Some brake calipers may have been made with gray iron instead of ductile iron and could fracture, increasing stopping distance and possibly causing an accident, the Washington-based agency said.
- Chrysler, Honda call back 482K vehicles (9/16/07)
- Chrysler LLC said it would recall nearly 300,000 sport utility vehicles to address potential braking problems while driving uphill. Chrysler spokesman Max Gates said the automaker had received about 20 complaints of vehicles experiencing a delay in braking when drivers tried to come to a stop after coasting uphill. To fix the problem, the computer connected to the antilock brake system will be reprogrammed. The affected models were made from March 24, 2005, through Feb. 8, 2007, Honda said. Water may be able to seep past an O-ring seal on the wheel bearing, damaging the bearing, Honda said on the NHTSA Web site. "This could cause a wheel to fall off of the vehicle, possibly resulting in a crash," Honda said.

And last week, it issued a recall of an estimated 3.6 million vehicles -- bringing the total recalled over the past decade to more than 10 million -- every single car and truck built with a similar cruise control switch.

- As part of a larger global recall, Honda is recalling about 165,000 cars and trucks in the U.S. from the 2005 – 06 model years due to potential engine defects. The problem stems from sealer material that can leak onto a coil wire inside the fuel pump, causing the wire to snap. That would lead to the cars stalling or failing to start. The company has received multiple complaints from customers, but there have been no injuries or crashes. Vehicles involved include 2005 Honda Accord coupes, sedans and hybrids, Odyssey minivans and 2006 Ridgeline pickups, as well as 2005 Acura RL, TL and TSX sedans.
